Prep time: 10 minutes

Cook time: 25-30 minutes

Total time: 45 minutes

This easy hot dog bun french toast is so delicious that you will want to make it even when you don’t have leftover hot dog buns! Hot dog buns absorb the egg mixture quickly, so it makes for a super quick breakfast the morning after your picnic or barbecue.

One thing about buying hotdogs and hamburger buns is that you will always have leftovers and never the exact amount of buns you need compared to the amount of hot dogs and hamburgers you cook! We always have a few random bags of hamburger or hot dog buns in our bread box. Now, you can make this delicious French toast bake without letting it go wrong.   If you have mix-and-match buns, you can still make this recipe!

I love this French toast casserole recipe’s combination of cinnamon and lemon zest! Cinnamon has a warm, spicy flavor, while lemon zest has a bright, citrusy flavor. These two flavors complement each other beautifully, with the lemon zest cutting through the sweetness of the cinnamon and adding a refreshing touch.

Ingredients:

Six Hot Dog Buns–  You can also use Hamburger Buns. Potato or Brioche buns work best, but this recipe will work for ALL hot dog and hamburger buns.

Six large eggs

1 cup milk (any kind) or cream

1/4 cup sugar

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

zest of one lemon

Butter for greasing the pan or cooking spray.

Equipment

Medium-sized mixing bowl

whisk

casserole baking dish

cooking spray

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Tear or cut the hot dog buns into bite-sized pieces and place them in a greased baking dish.

In a medium bowl, stir together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, and cinnamon (if using).

Pour the egg mixture over the hot dog bun pieces, soaking them evenly. Let the mixture sit for 5-10 minutes, allowing the bread to absorb the liquids.
