This chocolate rice krispie recipe has a richer, more complex flavor than making rice krispie treats using cocoa Krispies. Please use malted chocolate powder, not regular cocoa powder, in this recipe. You can find malted milk powder in the baking aisle at your grocery store.
How does malt flavor enhance these chocolate chip cookies?
The barley and wheat in chocolate malted milk powder contain natural umami compounds, which can enhance the flavor of these rice krispie treats, giving them more depth. The famous bakery, the Milk Bar, famously adds malted milk powder to several sweets.
Ingredients:
6 cups Rice Krispies cereal or any other generic crispy rice cereal
1/3 cup Carnation Chocolate Malt Powder
Six tablespoons unsalted butter
10 ounces mini marshmallows
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Additional optional ingredients: sea salt, peanut butter, semi-sweet chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, malted milk balls, or melted dark chocolate would taste good with this recipe but are unnecessary.
Equipment
Instructions:
1. Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan with butter or line it with parchment paper to make removing the treats easy.
2. Melt the Butter and Marshmallows: In a large pot over the stove, melt the butter over low heat. Add the mini marshmallows to the melted butter and stir until completely smooth.
Three stir in the Carnation Chocolate Malt Powder and vanilla extract once the marshmallows are melted.
4. Remove the saucepan from the heat and add the Rice Krispies cereal to the melted marshmallow mixture. Stir until the cereal is evenly coated with the marshmallow mixture.
5. Pour the mixture into the prepared pan. Use a rubber spatula to press the mixture in an even layer into the pan. Be careful not to press too hard, making the treats too dense.
6. Allow the treats to cool at room temperature until they are set, about an hour. For quicker settings, you can place the pan in the refrigerator for about 20-30 minutes.
