Prep time: 10 minutes

Set time: 15-20 minutes

Cook time: 35 minutes

This French toast bake is an easy way to serve breakfast or brunch for out-of-town family members when they visit! Pretzel bread is chewy and savory and tastes delicious as French toast!  The texture of this French toast casserole is perfect!  It is sweet but slightly salty and savory.   If you haven’t ever made French toast with pretzel bready you need to try this!

All you need is a few easy fridge pantry ingredients and pretzel buns.  I recommend using pretzel hamburger buns because you get the most pretzel bread for your money, but you can also use smaller pretzel bread.   I recommend using pretzel bread and not soft pretzels.  Soft pretzels won’t absorb the egg mixture well enough.

Ingredients

Four hamburger pretzel buns or six smaller pretzel buns- torn into pieces

Five large eggs

One cup of whole milk

1/2 cup brown sugar

One teaspoon of vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Optional toppings: maple syrup, powdered sugar, fresh fruit, whipped cream, berries, chocolate chips, orange slices, powdered sugar, fresh fruit, whipped cream

Equipment

Mixing bowl

whisk

casserole dish

cooking spray

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Prepare the Buns: Tear the pretzel buns into 1-inch cubes. Spread the bread evenly in a greased baking dish.
  3. Prepare the Egg Mixture: In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
  4. Pour the egg mixture over the sliced pretzel buns, ensuring all the pieces are coated. Press down on the buns with a spatula to help them soak up the liquid.  You can also make this ahead of time and let the pretzel bread soak up the egg mixture in the refrigerator overnight.

      5. Allow the buns to soak in the mixture for about 15-20 minutes, ensuring they absorb the liquid.

      6. Melt the butter and drizzle it over the soaked pretzel buns.

      7. Bake in the oven for 30-35 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.

      8. Remove the dish from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving. According to your preference, you can top it with maple syrup, powdered sugar, fresh berries, or whipped cream.

Storage: store the leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.  You can also store it in the freezer for up to a month.
