If you like the sweet onion chicken teriyaki sandwich from Subway, you will love this homemade version! This is better than the real thing and healthier too!
The sweet Onion Teriyaki Sandwich is one of the most popular sandwiches from Subway. This homemade version is healthier and tastes more delicious than the real thing. Making this sandwich for your family at home is also less expensive than eating out.
I originally posted this recipe as an Instant pot Recipe, but you can also make this on your stovetop or slow cooker. You will need less water if you adapt the recipe.

Here is a video I created on how I made this chicken.
Instructions
- Set your Instant Pot to the saute setting.
- In your Instant Pot, add oil and onions and cook the onions until they are translucent.
- Add soy sauce, red wine vinegar, balsamic vinegar, lemon juice, brown sugar, onion powder, garlic powder, ginger, water, salt pepper, cornstarch, and poppy seeds.
- Bring the sauce to a boil and whisk the sauce together.
- Add chicken and close, and secure the lid. Rotate the pressure release valve to “sealing.”
- Cook in the Instant Pot for 10 minutes. Quick release pressure
- Remove the chicken from the Instant Pot and store it in the fridge until the sauce turns sticky.
- Serve when the chicken has been chilled.
- You can also cook this recipe in a saucepan on your stove. Follow the same procedure, but cover and cook the chicken instead of cooking it in your Instant Pot.
