Malted Milk Chocolate Chip Cookies

by Kristen

Malted milk powder is the secret ingredient you didn’t know you needed for the best-tasting chocolate chip cookies!   These malted chocolate chip cookies are flavorful, chewy, gooey, and delicious!

I have been dabbling in different chocolate chip cookie recipes this year.  So far, I have tried these buttermilk chocolate chip cookies, olive oil chocolate chip cookies, and chocolate chip cookies made with bread flour.   I purchased some malt powder to add to smoothies this summer, so I tried adding the flavor to my basic chocolate chip cookie recipe!

How does malt flavor enhance these chocolate chip cookies?

The barley and wheat in malted milk powder contain natural umami compounds, which can enhance the flavor of cookies, giving them more depth.

You can find malt chocolate powder in the baking aisle at your grocery store!  The famous bakery, the Milk Bar, famously adds malted milk powder to several sweets.

Ingredients ( makes 15 cookies)

1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

1/3 cup malted milk powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

One stick of unsalted butter softened

3/4 cup packed brown sugar

One large egg

One teaspoon of vanilla extract

1 cup semisweet chocolate chips  or chocolate chunks

Additional Add-Ins- flaky sea salt, semi-sweet chocolate chips, milk chocolate chips,  M&M’s, nuts, or any other add-ins you enjoy in your cookies!  You can also add chocolate malt powder instead of regular malted milk powder.

  7. Using a cookie scoop or tablespoon, drop the cookie dough balls onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
