Christmas Snickerdoodles

Snickerdoodles rolled in Christmas Sugar

by Kristen

If you like snickerdoodles cookies,  you will love this Christmas version made with Christmas sugar to make them festive! Christmas Snickerdoodles are a classic recipe popular in Minnesota and other parts of the midwest.   Instead of rolling your cookie dough ball in cinnamon and sugar when you make a classic snickerdoodle cookie, you roll your cookie in green and red sugar. These are super easy to make and festive for the holiday season!

How are Christmas Snickerdoodles different from Regular Snickerdoodles?

Traditional Snickerdoodle cookies are coated in a cinnamon and sugar mixture. Christmas Snickerdoodles are rolled in festive Christmas sugar colors.

Where did Christmas Snickerdoodles originate?

It is believed that Snickerdoodles originated in New England. However, it is also thought that Christmas Snickerdoodles first became popular in Minnesota.

Can I make my family’s snickerdoodles recipe into a Christmas Snickerdoodle?

Yes! If you have a family recipe for Snickerdoodles that you love, make it, and you can still roll it in Christmas-colored sugars!

Ingredients Needed

1/2 cup Butter

One egg

3/4 cup sugar

One teaspoon of pure vanilla extract. I prefer pure vanilla, but imitation vanilla will also work with this recipe.

One tablespoon of maple syrupI think adding a tablespoon of maple syrup makes the flavor of these cookies over the top.

One teaspoon of baking soda

1 3/4 cup all-purpose flour

1/2  teaspoon salt

One teaspoon of Cream of Tarter- the purpose of using the cream of tarter in these cookies is to make them light and fluffy.

Two teaspoons of cinnamon – one teaspoon to mix with the cookie dough and one teaspoon to mix with the sugars.

Christmas Red and Green Sugar

Equipment

Baking sheet, cookie sheet, parchment paper, wire rack for cooling, large bowl. Oven,  hand mixer, or stand mixer. 1-2 small bowls for mixing the cinnamon sugar mixture.

Recipe add-ins: you can also try rolling your cookies in various Christmas or birthday sprinkles if you’re making these another time of the year. You can also try using small Christmas candies.

Recipe Note: Traditional Snickerdoodles are made with 1/2 cup shortening, not butter. You can replace it if you want to make these traditional.

  2. In a mixing bowl, sift dry ingredients together. Flour, baking powder, salt, and cream of tarter. Set aside.
  3. Cream the butter, white sugar, eggs, vanilla, and cream of tartar together in a separate bowl.
  4. Add dry ingredients to the butter mixture. Stir in the flour to make a dough.
  5. In various small bowls, mix each color of sugar with cinnamon
  6. Roll the cookie dough into small balls and roll each cookie dough ball into the sugar, coating the ball.
