These Applesauce Cornbread Muffins are moist, lightly sweet, and the perfect side dish for soup season, chili nights, and cozy fall meals.

Applesauce Cornbread Muffins

There is something comforting about a warm basket of cornbread muffins on the table. Whether you’re serving a hearty bowl of soup, a pot of chili, or a simple weeknight meal, cornbread has a way of making dinner feel complete. This easy cornbread recipe takes a classic favorite and gives it a small update by adding applesauce.

Applesauce has long been used in baking as a natural sweetener and moisture booster. It adds a subtle flavor while helping baked goods stay tender without needing large amounts of fat. In these muffins, the applesauce creates a soft texture that keeps the muffins moist for days while still allowing the traditional flavor of cornmeal to shine through. The result is a batch of southern cornbread muffins that are lightly sweet, fluffy, and perfect alongside savory meals.

One of my favorite things about this recipe is how versatile it is. These muffins work just as well on a chilly fall evening as they do at a summer cookout. They are sturdy enough to dip into soup, yet soft enough to enjoy with a little butter spread over the top while still warm from the oven.

1 tablespoon baking powder

½ teaspoon kosher salt

Serving Suggestions

These muffins are especially delicious with some of my favorite soup recipes. Serve them alongside:

Instant Pot Pastina Soup

Creamy Beef Wild Rice Soup

Tomatoless chili

Baked Beans Chili

For an even richer muffin, replace a portion of the milk with sour cream. The sour cream adds extra moisture and creates a slightly tangy flavor that works wonderfully with the sweet applesauce.

You can also add a little cinnamon for a fall-inspired flavor or stir in shredded cheddar cheese for a more savory version.
