Prep time: 30 minutes
Chill time: 1 hour
Cook time: 10 minutes
Total time: 2 hours
Ingredients Needed
Butter – Unsalted butter works best for this recipe, but if you only have salted, it will work fine. Butter should be softened at room temperature but not melted.
Granulated Sugar- You can measure your sugar using a measuring cup. You will want to use a butter knife to level it off when you are measuring it.
Eggs- 2 large eggs are needed for this recipe. Recipe. I always crack the egg into a small bowl before adding it to the recipe. Recipe.
Vanilla Extract– use pure vanilla extract for the best taste.
All-purpose flour– Use a measuring cup to measure your flower and a butter knife to level it off. Flour shouldn’t be packed into the measuring cup.
Baking Powder– Make sure the baking powder is mixed well with the flour.
Salt– salt from your salt shaker will work great!
Sprinkles –add as many sprinkles as you like to this recipe! You can add any color you want! I like Christmas Sprinkles or Rainbow Sprinkles!
Optional Ingredients- additional flavoring can be added if you like: lemon extract, peppermint extract, almond extract ( not all simultaneously), or any other flavors that might taste great with this recipe.
Equipment
Large mixing bowl or bowl of a stand mixer.
Cookie Scoop
Electric hand mixer or stand mixer: If you use a stand mixer, make sure you use the paddle attachment.
cookie sheets or baking sheets
Parchment paper or silicone mat
cutting board, cookie cutters, and rolling pin
Instructions
1. Cream butter, sugar, vanilla, and eggs in a mixing bowl.
2. Whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt in a second bowl.
2. Slowly add the flour to the butter and sugar mixture until a cookie dough is formed.
3. Fold in sprinkles.
4. Cover the dough with plastic wrap and chill the dough in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour, preferably overnight. Chilling the dough will help make the cookies chewy and prevent them from spreading too much.
5. When it is time to bake cookies, preheat the oven to 400 f.
6. On a cutting board, dusted with flour, roll the cookie dough into 1/2 sheets. Dust flour onto the dough if it is sticky. Cut out cookie shapes and place them onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Parchment paper. Make sure that the cookies are at least 1 inch apart. Cookies should be golden brown.
7. Bake cookies for 8 minutes. They will still look light when you remove them from the oven.
8. Let the cookies cool slightly before transferring them to a cooling rack.
9. Cookies should be cooled completely before decorating.

Decorate!
The decoration options for these cutout cookies are endless! I like the simple frosting and sprinkles. You can make homemade cookies, but the store-bought frosting will also work. If you use store-bought canned frosting, remove the foil from the container and heat it in the microwave for two 10-second intervals. This will help the frosting spread easier.
