Slow Cooker Chicken Gyros

by Kristen

I love serving these slow cooker chicken gyros at parties.  It is nice to do something slightly different from your typical pulled meat sandwiches.  This slow cooker pulled chicken is packed with tons of flavor and tastes fantastic on warm pita bread with Greek toppings galore!

I love these slow cooker Greek chicken gyros so much that it hurts.  This is an easy crockpot recipe that uses boneless chicken breasts, but you can make this recipe using skinless chicken thighs.

I decided to try making Greek Chicken Gyros in the crockpot.   It was risky since the chicken used in gyros usually has a yogurt coating.  I wasn’t sure how these would turn out, putting Greek Yogurt in the crockpot.  This dish turned out flavorful and creamy.  I couldn’t stop.

If you would instead cook this recipe in a pressure cooker, I have an Instant Pot Chicken Gyros Recipe as well.

I recommend topping these gyros with as many fresh veggies as possible!  I recommend lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, red onion, and kalamata olives.

I made a homemade Greek Yogurt Tzatziki sauce to go on these chicken gyros.  If you like Tzatziki sauce, you can grab my recipe for easy Tzatziki sauce and get 25 meal ideas with Tzatziki sauce!

I also topped mine with red onion, tomatoes, cucumbers, and feta cheese.  You don’t have to use all these toppings, but man, the combo is fantastic!

The instructions for this recipe are super easy!  This is an actual “dump and cook” recipe for those busy nights!

Ingredients needed

2 lbs of boneless skinless chicken breasts or boneless chicken tenders

juice of one lemon

Three garlic cloves

Two teaspoons of red wine vinegar

2-3 tablespoons of olive oil

1/2 cup of Greek Yogurt

Two teaspoons of dried oregano

2-4 teaspoons Cavender’s Greek Seasoning

1/2 of a small red onion – chopped

Two tablespoons of dill weed

Tzatziki Sauce

1 cup of plain Greek Yogurt

One tablespoon of Dillweed

One teaspoon of Lemon Juice

One small English cucumber- chopped

pinch of salt and pepper

One teaspoon of onion powder

Garnishes

tomatoes

cucumbers

red onion

feta cheese

Pita bread

Method: In a slow cooker- add all of the ingredients for the chicken gyros.  If you are using larger chicken breasts- you may want to cut them into smaller pieces.  Stir all of the parts together.  Cook on low for 6 hours or high for 4 hours.  Once the chicken is cooked, shred the chicken and return it to the crockpot.   Mix all of the ingredients for the Tzatziki Sauce.  Place some chicken in pita bread, top with Tzatziki sauce and other garnishes of your choice, and enjoy!

Super flavorful. Although I’ve also made the recipe without the yogurt and I think it still turned out pretty good.

Did you use fresh or dried dill weed?

Can you use sour cream instead of Greek yogurt? I don’t have any on hand.

Thanks

Hi Kristin. I’m not a fan of shredded chicken. Do you think i could cut the chicken into bite sized pieces and cook that way?

Kristen January 10, 2020 - 1:07 pm

Yes! I would try it, but you might want to keep the cooking time a little lower- like 4-6 hours so the chicken doesn’t fall apart.

What kind of yogurt do you use to cook in the chicken? Plain?

How many gyros does this make? I have 12 to feed.

Kristen April 8, 2018 - 1:47 am

This will feed 8-10. You might want to add a little more chicken.
