Instant Pot Chicken Gyros

You are going to love this  Greek-inspired Chicken Gyro Recipe!  This recipe is good for you, turns out tender, and is a family-pleasing dinner option for any night of the week. I also love serving Chicken gyros at parties!

My slow cooker chicken gyros have become my ultimate go-to recipe for when I want to make something for a crowd. You can literally never go wrong. People seem to like them, plus they really are the perfect thing to make for parties.

Chicken gyros taste amazing on pita bread or naan. You can also use them delicious, perfectly seasoned meat on a salad or in a chicken gyro quesadilla.

So anyway, since I literally only make my chicken gyros in my Instant Pot, I thought it was about time for me to actually show you how to make them in my Instant Pot! The ingredient list on this is actually the same as my slow cooker version. It’s a super easy recipe too. You dump the ingredients in the pot and let it do its magic!

I made this video to show you how easy this recipe truly is!

Here are the ingredients you need to make these Chicken Gyros

Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts- You can also try this recipe with skinless chicken thighs.

Olive Oil

Lemons or Lemon juice

Red Wine Vinegar

Red Onion

Garlic Cloves

Dried Oregano

Greek Yogurt

Greek Seasoning

Dried Dill

Salt and Pepper

Water or Chicken Broth

Gyro toppings you will want o to have on hand: include onion, cucumber, lettuce, tomatoes, feta cheese, homemade Tzatziki sauce, and kalamata olives.

How to Make Instant Pot Chicken Gyros

1. Place, olive oil, lemon juice, dill, Greek Seasoning, red wine vinegar, and Greek Yogurt into the bottom of the Instant Pot.

2. Close and lock lid, rotate the pressure release valve to “sealing,” and set the Instant Pot’s manual timer button to 15 minutes.  Pressure Cook

3. While the chicken is cooking, make tzatziki sauce in a bowl.

4. Let the pressure naturally release. Open the lid And let out the remaining pressure

5. Shred chicken with a fork

Not only do I love these chicken gyros. I also pretty much love anything that has a spoonful of Tzatziki sauce and kalamata olives on top it. So many wonderful flavors were mouthwatering.

I also love making this recipe for parties because it is really something different to make. It is such a different dish than the usual “pulled pork” you see at get-togethers a lot in the Midwest. But at the same time, it is not so different that picky eaters won’t try it.

Instant Pot Chicken Gyros

Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 30 minutes
Total Time 40 minutes
Servings 8

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs of boneless skinless chicken breast
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • juice of 1 lemon and 1/4 cup red wine vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Greek seasoning.
  • 1 cup Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 cup chopped red onion
  • 2 tablespoons dried dill

Toppings

  • pita bread or naan
  • lettuce
  • tomatoes
  • kalamata olives
  • feta cheese
  • cucumbers
  • Tzatziki sauce

Tzatziki Sauce

  • 1 cup Greek Yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon dried dill
  • 1 small English cucumber, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 dash salt
  • 1 dash pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Dump the chicken, olive oil, lemon juice, dill, greek seasoning, red wine vinegar, and Greek Yogurt into your Instant Pot or Pressure Cooker

  2. Close the lid to your Instant Pot and cook on high pressure for 30 minutes

  3. Let naturally release.  Shred chicken.  If you are not serving the chicken right away, let it marinate in the juices it cooked in.

  4. Build your gyro to your personal preference and serve.

This recipe works great for many meal prep dishes.  This meal is high in protein and fiber and low in sodium, calories, and cholesterol.

Note: I have had a ton of you ask about what Greek Seasoning I use. I use Cavender’s Greek Seasoning

If you make this recipe please let me know how it turned out!  Please tag me on social media or comment below this post!  You can purchase premade Tzatziki sauce at many grocery stores.  However, I recommend that you make your own Tzatziki sauce!  This is such a great recipe to make for parties! It is different and your friends and family will love it!

Does water or chicken broth need to go in the pot before cooking as well? Seems like there needs to be more liquid to come to pressure.

Kristen January 18, 2023 - 4:36 pm

You should be fine with 3/4 cup of water- there’s also water in most of the ingredients.

Hi there, the red onion is listed in the instant pot chicken ingredients section, not the toppings. Are chopped red onion meant to go into the pot to pressure cook or be sliced for topping?

Kristen September 25, 2019 - 1:10 am

They’re supposed to be in both places. Of course, the topping is optional. Thanks for letting me know about this.

Patricia September 21, 2019 - 9:06 pm

Your video shows you adding garlic, but the recipe does not list it. How much?

Kristen September 22, 2019 - 1:25 pm

1-2 cloves. thanks, I will amend the recipe.

These sound wonderful! I need to make a large amount to feed a crowd while on vacation, and would love to make it ahead of time. Do you think you could make it and freeze it – and then thaw & reheat? or would the yogurt make that a problem?

Kristen June 26, 2018 - 3:01 am

I freeze this recipe all the time! It has always worked for me!

Barbara June 10, 2018 - 11:54 pm

Has anyone tried making this non-dairy?

Kristen June 11, 2018 - 1:55 am

I have made it without the yogurt. It is a little less creamy, but still good.

Made this tonight. First taste while getting ready to serve…I loved it, but wasn’t sure if the kids would because it is definitely a lot of strong flavors. My 6 year old and 3 year old both loved it. They even put feta on it…which grossed my husband out…I love feta. And now and my kids do, too!! Thank you!!!

Kristen August 10, 2019 - 12:43 pm

I am so glad you liked it! My kids love this chicken too! 🙂

I made this regularly years ago… and my son brought it up recently… somehow it fell off the regular rotation… still a favorite. My kids say I need to make it weekly for a while to make up for not having it for over a year. LOL

Can you triple this recipe for large crowd? If so, how long should you cook?

Kristen April 9, 2018 - 10:15 pm

I have made this recipe for a big crowd 2-3 times. I actually just made it in advance three times. Otherwise, your Instant Pot might get too full. I always make the recipe a day before, then put into a slow cooker for serving the day of.

It’s cooking now. Smells good but i’m afraid it’ll burn. We’ll see and I’ll let you know. Followed recipe to the letter.

Let me know how they turn out!

DOES THE GREEK YOGURT GO IN WITH THE CHICKEN? OR IS THAT FOR THE SAUCE

Kristen February 5, 2018 - 10:02 pm

it goes with the chicken. It makes it super tender!

Ann February 5, 2018 - 2:22 am

Do you let the pot release on its oWn or manually release the valve when the chicken is done?

Kristen February 5, 2018 - 3:37 am

I have done both. I don’t think it matters here, since the chicken will pull apart no matter what.

Matt February 2, 2018 - 4:39 am

30 minutes 30 minutes is way too much cooking time

Kristen February 2, 2018 - 2:24 pm

I know it might be a bit of an overkill. But I really love it when my chicken pulls apart at the touch when I take it out. 🙂
