DIY Applesauce To-Go

DOY applesauce to go5

This year, my four-year-old will be staying at preschool for lunch- so I wanted to come up with some fun lunch box snacks-without giving him store-bought snacks with all those artificial colors!

Plus, I had bought a big bag of apples, where the first few were really bruised.   I thought I would use the rest of the bag to make some homemade applesauce for him to take to lunch when school starts!

Homemade applesauce is super easy, and only uses a few ingredients.

I made these DIY applesauces to go using these zipcicle bags.   I found them on amazon. If you are looking for something reusable, you can always look for these silicone smoothie containers too.

I have always used just a plastic funnel when making these snacks for my kids.   I just recently got this collapsable silicone funnel.   This was so easy to use.  You could literally just squeeze the applesauce into each bag.

DIY Applesauce

I made my homemade apple sauce in my slow cooker.  My house smelled like cinnamon apples all day- I had my two sons begging for applesauce all day!

Homemade Applesauce to go- makes about 15

Ingredients

12 apples- peeled and cut off the core

juice and zest of two lemons

3/4 cup of sugar- or less or more depending on how much sugar you want to give your kids.  You can also sub maple syrup or honey

1 teaspoon of vanilla

1 cup of water

1-2 teaspoons of cinnamon

Method:  Peel the apples and cut them into slices.   Put them into your slow cooker on low with the rest of the ingredients.   let them cook on low for 4-6 hours.   Let applesauce cool and blend it until it is as chunky as you like.   I use my immersion blender.   Using the funnel, put the applesauce into each bag and store in the fridge.

My two-year old actually passed up a popcicle in order to have one of these for dessert.  I guess I am going to have to make more!!  Hello Fall!
