Although, we have had some pretty cold and rainy days lately here in Iowa, I am really looking forward to summer.   In addition to holiday parties, family reunions and BBQ’s with friends- we grill out and eat outside as much as we can!   It is so nice to be outside as a family as much as possible during those summer months.- Plus, when my two little son’s drop crumbs during dinner- clean up is SOOO much easier on the deck. ( because I let the birds have at it)

Memorial Day is right around the corner!   Here is a recipe that will be impress your friends this summer holiday season!   This recipe couldn’t be easier or tastier!   Johnsonville original bratwurst are already packed with flavor and don’t need a lot of added ingredients.

I love this twist of using pretzel bread as a bun for bratwurst!  I have had a burger with pretzel bread- but this was my first time using it with a brat.

In order to make Pretzel and Beer bratwurst, I purchased pieces of pretzel bread from my local grocery store’s deli department.  Yet, I thought they contained a little too much bread for a bratwurst.   I hollowed out each piece of pretzel bread with a spoon to make it into an easy pretzel bread bun.

I also boiled my bratwurst in beer and added caramelized onions as well.  You can add any additional toppings you like.

Beer Bratwurst

Pretzel and Beer Bratwurst – Serves 5

Ingredients

1 package of Johnsonville original bratwurst

5 pieces of pretzel bread

2 bottles of your favorite beer

1 onion- chopped

1 tablespoon of olive oil

Mustard- and other condiments

Method:  Prepare all your ingredients.  boil the bratwurst in the beer.  Hollow out each piece of pretzel bread ( save it for something else). and caramelize the onions slowly in the olive oil.  Grill your bratwurst.  On a sheet pan, arrange the “pretzel buns” put a bratwurst in each bun and top with caramelized onions.  Bake in the oven at 350 degrees f- until the buns get crispy.  Remove from oven. Top with condiments and enjoy!

This was such a huge hit!  My kids love pretzel bread and were really excited that I made this for a meal.   I love how all of these ingredients can be prepared in advance.  Perfect and easy for any summer get-together.

Pretzel bread sounds amazing. I love that you’ve boiled the brats in beer. Sorry, I can’t stop this from being in capitals!

It is definitely grilling season and brats are on the menu. I like your choice of the pretzel bun.

Haha, I am totally with you on eating outside! All the crumbs can just be swept off the veranda and left for the birds.

And here in Oz any bigger bits are just thrown out into the garden for the roos!

I have never had pretzel bread rolls, they aren’t something that is common here. But I love making my own pretzel bites. Wonder if I could make rolls out of that.

THESE SAUSAGES LOOK AMAZING!!! AND I LOVE THE IDEA OF POACHING THEM IN BEER!!! SO MUCH EXTRA FLAVOUR. YUM
