Live Healthy Iowa- 10 Week Iowa Blogger Wellness Challenge

Iowa blogger wellness chllenge

Last fall, I was on a blogging trip, and I was explaining to the other bloggers-from across the country- how most of the Iowa bloggers are actually really close.    I see a good group of them a few times a year, plus communicate almost daily online with them- as we help each other on a variety of blogging topics.   Like everyone else in the state of Iowa, all of the bloggers are so darn nice!

There are a group of us Iowa bloggers who are participating in a 10 week wellness challenge- sponsored by the Iowa Food and Family Project.   I LOVE participating in groups when attempting to achieve my goals.  It helps so much, to have friends who will help me hold myself accountable.  For more information, visit Live Healthy Iowa.

Here are some ways I stay well!

  1. Workout 3-4 times a week:

I workout anyway I can, when I am able.  I belong to The Cedar Valley Sportplex in Waterloo– and it’s pretty much my sanctuary.  I try to run 2-3 miles on their track 3-4 times a week.   On days when I am not quite up to running, I walk or workout on the eliptical machine.  I always feel better after a good workout.  I have been running since high school, and even though I am 33, I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.

2.  Get Steps in when I can:

Okay, I LOVE my Fitbit.  I love participating in group challenges whenever I can!  I find them to be motivating!    Sometimes, during the winter months, my kids and I might be cooped up all day.  ( Due to weather or illness.)   On those days, I have created a habit of turning on music and literally walking/ dancing around the house with the kids.  It is so much fun!   I can’t wait to get on the Live Healthy Iowa Website to track all of my daily activity!

3.  Eat less sugar.  Even though I share many desserts on this blog with no refined sugar, I still probably eat more sugar than I should.  ( sorry to burst the bubble, but I have got to keep it real here.)   I am guilty of putting maple syrup in my coffee,  having my nightly dark chocolate square  ( or maybe two).  or even grabbing for my kids’  ( fill in the blank holiday) candy after a stressful bedtime routine.

I was actually really excited when Alexa from Simple Roots Wellness ( a fellow Iowa Blogger)  asked me to review her FREE downloadable wellness guide.  She has some really informative tips, snack ideas and awesome healthy drink options.  I don’t want to spoil it for you, but you really need to check this out.   I am actually loving her ideas on cutting out sugar and I can’t wait to give some of them a try.

4.  Make healthy food ahead of time:

Would you like to know my biggest food weakness?  It’s lunchtime- after a really long run at the gym, and I am HUNGRY!  At this time, I probably eat more than I should.   What am I trying to do about this?   Keep already healthy food stocked in the fridge!  I LOVE healthy winter soups.  Right now, they fit the bill.  One of my favorite soups is my carrot and almond soup.   This is something that is a work in progress for me.

5.)  Prepare dinner ahead of time.  I am going to share with you, something that I make at least 3 -4 times a month.  Slow cooker rotisserie chicken..   It is the easiest dinner ever, and my four-year-old asks for it all the time.   I always make broth out of the bones for homemade soup later in the week.  My family only gets Chinese food or pizza a few times a year, but every time that happens I always have a lump in my stomach afterwards.   No excuses, when making dinner is so easy.  ( or really in a pinch?  get a grocery store chicken, still much healthier than pizza!!!)  Live Healthy Iowa also has some really great recipe ideas on their website.
