In the Geneseo, Illinois Women’s Club Cookbook, there is a recipe for German Chocolate Cake. ( Geneseo, Illinois is where my dad grew up, and where my Great- Great -Great Grandfather settled when he came over from Sweden)
My dad loves this cake. Once in a while, my mom will make it. It’s magnificent. The last time I has some, it was the night of my brother and sister-in-law’s rehearsal dinner.
I decided to make a German Chocolate Cake Smoothie. It turned out quite delicious. Plus it’s healthy.
I basically combined all of the flavors of German Chocolate Cake and added them to this smoothie- including nuts. Nice little protein add there. I might just need to make this for breakfast some time.
let’s talk about bananas for a second.
I like freezing bananas, smashed in a plastic bag. I will literally cut the bag off of the bananas using kitchen shears. I like to freeze bananas in a quart sized bag, two at a time. When freezing bananas for smoothies, freeze them right when they start to show some brown spots. I don’t think that green bananas make good smoothies. and if it’s too ripe, it is just too sweet.
German Chocolate Cake Smoothie ( serves 2)
Ingredients
2 frozen bananas
1 cup of milk
about 10 pecans or 10 walnuts
1/4 cup of unsweetened coconut flakes
1 tablespoon cocoa powder. or more or less based on your chocolate preference
Method: Place all the ingredients in a plastic bag and blend in your blender. Garnish with extra coconut if desired and serve.
I actually made this for an afternoon snack this weekend. It was a big hit with the kiddos!
