Greek food just gets me.
An no, I am not Greek. I was just fortunate enough to live less than 15 minutes away from Chicago’s best Greek restaurant. – The Greek Isles. Their Moussaka gets me every time. Their anything just gets me.
I decided to try making Greek Chicken Gyros in the crock pot. It was a little bit risky, since the chicken used in gyros usually has a yogurt coating. I wasn’t sure how these would turn out- putting Greek Yogurt in the crock pot. This dish turned out flavorful and creamy. I just couldn’t stop.
I made a homemade Greek Yogurt Tzatziki sauce to go on these chicken gyros. I also topped mine with red onion, tomatoes, cucumbers and feta cheese. You don’t have to use all these toppings, but man, the combo is awesome!
Slow Cooker Chicken Gyros
2 lbs of boneless-skinless chicken breasts or boneless chicken tenders
juice of one lemon
3 garlic cloves
2 teaspoons of red wine vinegar
2-3 tablespoons of olive oil
1/2 cup of Greek Yogurt
2 teaspoons of dried oregano
2-4 teaspoons of Greek Seasoning. I use Cavender All Purpose Greek Seasoning 3.25 oz
1/2 of a small red onion – chopped
2 tablespoons of dill weed
1 cup of plain Greek Yogurt
1 tablespoon of Dill weed
1 small English cucumber- chopped
pinch of salt and pepper
1 teaspoon of onion powder
Method: In a slow cooker- add all of the ingredients for the chicken gyros. If you are using larger chicken breasts- you may want to cut them into smaller pieces. Stir all of the ingredients together. Cook on low for 6 hours or high for 4 hours. Once the chicken in cooked, shred the chicken and return to the crock pot. Mix all the of the ingredients together for the Tzatziki Sauce. Place some chicken in pita bread, top with Tzatziki sauce, and other garnishes of your choice and enjoy!
My kids just loved these- as did I! I am going to be making this again soon! What an easy dinner this was!
